Humming bird nesting at my home
Observing hummingbird (Sunbird) nest at my home is rewarding and enchanting experience for me. A little bird working day n night so hard while building nest, laying eggs and then continuously feeding their little babies.
Hummingbird nests are amazing architectural creations that protect and nurture some of the most delicate birds.

Humming Bird- Location for nesting
Humming bird had chosen safe, sheltered locations for its nest, by ensuring that the hatchling are protected from sun, wind rain, or predators. Bird has chosen the Pomegranate tree of my home for nesting. Nest height is around 5.6 feet above the ground.
Hummingbird Nest Construction
Humming bird started building their nest from 17th march 2012. Hummingbird nest has been built entirely by the female bird – male hummingbird (I call him Handsome, he really is!!) does not have any part in raising chicks once the initial act of copulation is complete. ....
The female has spent several hours a day for 5-7 days collecting materials to build her nest. The most common nesting materials found in hummingbird nests include:

- Spider silk

Hummingbird - Nests Over Time
Hummingbird laid two eggs that are roughly half an inch long; birds growing rapidly and the nest accommodate their changing size. The spider silk used in the nest’s construction giving it elasticity to expand with the birds’ growth, and the female parent will frequently patch and repair the nest even after the chicks have hatched. Male and female both starts feeding their babies since morning till the evening. Female bird sleeps with their babies in night.

Baby Bird's first flight
Today, 1 May 2012 at 9:00 AM, in the morning I was in my garden, watching the same routine of female and male birds feeding their baby birds. When the parents were away for food, suddenly one of the little baby came out of the nest and started flying, my eyes opened wide with shock, it was so stunning for me, as the little baby bird takes its first leap into the big wide world!!! And then the second one also came out and started flying. Both the baby birds fledged on the ground but seems they are still dependent upon parental care and feeding. ....
As I said parents were away for food that time. And when they returned and found that they are not in the nest so they started calling up them, and here they are!! Finally they found the baby birds. But the parent did not feed him. He let him see the moth, and then, with a loud call, off he flew to the next tree. When the little bird saw the food going away, he forgot he was afraid, and with a cry of horror he sprang after it; and so, before he knew it, he had flown. Baby birds followed their parents, and finally they disappeared from my eyes.
Now the nest is empty. No bird chirping out there. I am missing them. But I am delighted that I have seen most part of the life journey of a humming bird.

The Baby Bird came back!!!
On 5 May 2012, in the morning, while I was brushing my teeth, I recognized the voice of the baby bird (I had spent so much time with them I couldn’t forget their voice), firstly I thought it cant be they, but the voice was making me curious, I started searching that where the voice coming from. And after a while I found the baby bird. She was sitting on the Amla (Indian Gooseberry) tree in my garden. I was mesmerized seeing the baby bird there. ...
I was so glad to see her back in my garden. I was truly missing them. She came up with her mother, may be her mother was teaching her the tricks of searching food. Baby bird had grown up a little, but not that adult as their parents looks like. The baby bird spent 3-4 hours there on the same tree and then she left. It was a beautiful morning for me.
